As any equestrian who has ever tried to cross a road at night knows, riding on horseback at night can be very dangerous as the horses aren’t always visible to motorists. Even walking the horses across a road in the dark can be challenging.
It was for that reason I started looking for a solution, then finally came up with one myself – impact-activated leg wraps with LED lights that would flash only when the horse was moving.
After researching and interviewing manufacturers, I placed my first order and waited patiently for the leg wraps to arrive. When they did, I strapped a pair on each of my horses and took them out. What happened next was exciting, and just what I had hoped for.
As drivers saw the lights flashing in the distance, they slowed down a lot! Then, after finally figuring out what they were looking at, they stopped until the horses were safely across the road. Frequently the drivers would ask questions about the leg wraps and it wasn’t long until other equestrians in the area, including the Los Angeles Police Department’s equestrian unit, started purchasing them for their own horses.
When we saw how popular the leg wraps are with equestrians, posses and other law enforcement agencies, we contacted an attorney and with his help, applied for a patent.
The patent was granted on the one-of-a-kind, innovative stand-alone product. It was tested against all other known products that were alike in some fashion to it (i.e. reflective background or flashing LEDs, etc).
I was able to prove complete innovation of a unique product and, after months of review by the U.S. Patent Office, was granted the U.S patent.
